Open PhD position on microbial electrosynthesis - PANGEA project

We are seeking candidates to conduct a PhD on microbial technologies for carbon dioxide conversion. Place of work: Laboratory of Chemical and Environmental Engineering of the University of Girona - LEQUIA (Catalonia, Spain). Envisaged date of start: January 2023. Contract: The selected candidate will apply for a 4-years grant from the Spanish National Research Agency AEI (“Ayudas Predoctorales para la Formación de Doctores-FPI”) linked to the funded research project “PANGEA”. The grant covers academic fees and research stays in other institutions. Supervisor: Dr Sebastià Puig.

Requirements

  • Hold a Bachelor’s Degree in chemical/environmental engineering, chemistry, environmental sciences, biotechnology, or equivalent.
  • Have passed at least 60 ECTS of the Master’s Studies required to enrol in a doctorate program in the University of Girona.
  • Have a good academic record.
  • Be fluent in English.

Who we are

LEQUIA (the Laboratory of Chemical and Environmental Engineering) is a research group of the University of Girona (Catalonia, Spain) devoted to the development of eco-innovative environmental solutions. LEQUIA projects are multidisciplinary and involve environmental scientists, chemists, biologists, engineers and social scientists. Our current research lines are 1) innovative bioprocesses for treatment, resource recovery and synthesis of new products, 2) physicochemical advanced processes for treatment and/or reuse of liquid and gas side streams, and 3) planning, control, and evaluation of complex environmental systems.

Research project

The PhD is linked to PANGEA project, funded by the Spanish National Research Agency. PANGEA will study new bioelectrochemical systems for the bio-electro conversion of CO2 into sustainable products such as methane or ethanol plus acetic acid. The project will involve the design, operation and control of pilot plants for microbial electrosynthesis.
